Franchising as a business model has matured over the decades, and with maturity has come its global expansion. Most franchises have been heavily dependent on domestic economies, but today this form of business is found around the world.

U.S. franchises have paved the way into countries like China, with Kentucky Fried Chicken opening the first outlet in Beijing in 1987. Today, China is encouraging foreign and domestic enterprises to open franchises as a means of increasing employment and growing local economies in less populated areas of the country.
