Cal State San Marcos has appointed Dr. Godfrey Gibbison as the new dean of Extended Learning effective Jan. 18.

Gibbison comes to CSUSM from the College of Charleston in South Carolina where he most recently served as dean of the Graduate School.

“Extended Learning plays a critical role on our campus and in our region,” said CSUSM Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Carl Kemnitz. “Dr. Gibbison’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment during a global pandemic when individuals need access to innovative continuing education programs to facilitate career advancement and address regional and societal challenges. I’m enthusiastic about Extended Learning’s future under Dr. Gibbison’s leadership. He brings tremendous vision and experience in strategic and operational leadership for our Extended Learning enterprise.”

Gibbison previously served as the College of Charleston’s dean of the School of Professional Studies and launched its Bachelor of Professional Studies in 2013. Other accomplishments include the expansion of services to military and veteran students.

Before joining the College of Charleston, Gibbison was the director of the School of Economic Development at Georgia Southern University where he served on the faculty from 2002-12. Gibbison earned his Ph.D. in economics from Virginia Tech, his master’s in agricultural economics from Iowa State University and his bachelor’s in economics from the University of the West Indies.

“I am truly humbled and extremely excited to join the Cal State San Marcos team,” Gibbison said. “This is an extraordinary community of people devoted to the success of its students and meeting the needs of the community.
