Le Joyce Naylor Addresses Unconscious Bias at Cleveland Clinic as Path to Inclusivity

Under Le Joyce Naylor’s leadership as Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer for the Cleveland Clinic, the global hospital and health system is recognized as an industry leader in the diversity and inclusion (D&I) space. Understanding the complexity of working in a highly matrixed organization with 66,000 employees from varying backgrounds caring for millions of diverse patients, she introduced unconscious bias training to provide awareness and understanding of its impact on decision-making and to encourage inclusive conversations in every organizational process.

Le Joyce has relied on a number of best practices, and one is viewing D&I through a systems lens. This requires data analytics to process map opportunities for improvement and to quantify and qualify opportunities for celebration. She uses data to develop organizational key results and planned strategies. Additional best practices include leveraging employee resource groups and diversity councils as transformational agents. Le Joyce adopted a consultancy role to facilitate D&I on a global basis, helping the global organization meet unique needs while providing a basis for shared D&I language, data framework, and success metrics.
