Dechert Names Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer

Dechert LLP has announced that Satra Sampson-Arokium has stepped into an expanded role as the firm’s first Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. Ms. Sampson-Arokium is Dechert’s first black C-level professional.

Andrew Levander, Chair of Dechert’s Policy Committee, said, “Since joining Dechert in 2017 as our Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Satra has made a significant contribution to the culture and trajectory of our firm. This appointment emphasizes that diversity, equity and inclusion are at the core of Dechert’s business strategy.”

Ms. Sampson-Arokium has spearheaded several important initiatives at Dechert, including:

• Stand Against Racism Town Hall and Speaker Series to address recent events related to racism and social justice in the United States and around the world, as well as how to deal with it from a mental health perspective.
• Firmwide inclusive leadership and allyship training; interactive sessions include dramatizations

that prompt conversations long after the programming ends. .
• Diversity dashboards that help firm leadership identity where things are working effectively and where more attention is needed. .
• Diversity Champions award program, open to all those at Dechert whatever their seniority, role, or location, set up to recognize those who have given most to support a diverse and inclusive culture.

Ms. Sampson-Arokium works closely with Dechert’s Management Committee and Diversity and Inclusion Committee in setting and implementing the firm’s strategic plans and priorities for diversity and inclusion. In her expanded role, Ms. Sampson-Arokium will have an increased focus on client partnership and collaboration to further our shared diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) goals.

Ms. Sampson-Arokium commented, “Diversity, equity and inclusion are critical components to the success of any global institution. I have devoted my professional life to furthering these principles and it is more critical now than ever that we prioritize creating and sustaining an inclusive legal industry.”

Prior to joining Dechert, Ms. Sampson-Arokium served as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at another international law firm where she was responsible for designing, developing and implementing leading-edge diversity and inclusion strategic initiatives. Prior to that position, she spent over a decade at a leading global audit, consulting and financial advisory firm in various roles including Chief of Staff for Global Enterprise Risk Services and then as Senior Consultant for Global Diversity.

Long-committed to DEI issues, Dechert is currently the only law firm on Diversity Best Practice’s list of Leading Inclusion Index Companies and earned a perfect score of 100 in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index for the ninth consecutive year. In addition, the firm is an adopter of the Mansfield Rule, an innovative program designed to measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, lawyers of color, and LGBTQ+ lawyers for significant governance roles, senior lateral openings, and promotions and formal pitch opportunities.
