Empowering Future Leaders: LAPD Cadets Graduate from USC’s Real World Ready Financial Literacy Program

In a remarkable celebration of achievement, 25 LAPD Cadets recently completed the USC GEMS Real World Ready Financial Literacy Program, a groundbreaking initiative designed by Professor Michael Paranal of the Marshall School of Business and Leventhal School of Accounting, in partnership with Ms. Nora Mendez of USC Marshall Global Partnership Programs. Sponsored by Golden State Bank under the leadership of Board Chair and USC Marshall alum Robert Setrakian, the program equips young cadets with essential financial skills to help them thrive in adulthood. Special guest Dr. Carolina Castillo, Executive Director of USC Good Neighbors Program and USC Community Partnerships and Civic Engagement, honored the graduates, underscoring the importance of programs that strengthen ties between USC and the broader Los Angeles community.

At the heart of Real World Ready is USC’s commitment to social responsibility and civic-minded leadership. Prof. Paranal created Real World Ready to emphasize human leadership and civic mindedness in young Marshall students. The program is the outreach arm of Guiding Exceptional Minds to Success (GEMS), where USC students learn financial literacy and mentor younger students in the community. This unique model encourages USC students to embody leadership and empathy, while also uplifting the next generation of leaders. The LAPD Cadet Program, already known for shaping young minds through physical, emotional, and mental discipline, now incorporates financial empowerment, creating a holistic approach to youth development.

With a new city-wide partnership with the LAPD, Real World Ready is set to expand its reach across Los Angeles, further amplifying its positive impact on the city’s youth. By providing young people with critical financial skills, the program prepares them not just for the "real world" but for leadership, social impact, and lifelong success. This initiative exemplifies USC’s ongoing dedication to community engagement and fostering socially responsible leaders.
