Julie Kim, President of the U.S. Business Unit and U.S. Country Head at Takeda, developed the Candid Conversations video series, in which executives and employee resource group leaders from around the globe showed vulnerability by talking openly about their respective diversity, equity and inclusion experiences plus acknowledging where they still had room for growth. The goal was to normalize DEI conversations within the organization.
Julie challenged her team to think of ways to create alternate career path options. This helps to increase multiple parameters of diversity in the workforce by rethinking job description requirements to focus on necessary capabilities for that role, rather than historical screening parameters such as extensive time in a sales role or previous pharmaceutical experience. She also continues to work with private and government institutions to create pathways into Takeda, and the pharmaceutical industry, for individuals without college degrees.
In regards to talent management, the USBU holds talent summits to review turnover data, identify trends, and look at talent reviews and succession plans for the total population and underrepresented talent. She also a strong advocate for a program called Inclusion Bar Raiser, which elevates inclusiveness in the interviewing and selection process for mid-level and senior leaders. Julie holds regular listening sessions with 11 Takeda ERGs that support DEI and broader business goals. As a leader, she is focused on creating a psychologically safe environment, managing relationships with empathy and trust, and being an active ally.
